"Head Tripped" ~3~ Duo stood in the forest clearing, beside the stone slab. "An altar," he thought. "It /does/ look like an altar, doesn't it?" He looked around the clearing, searching for the boy in the dusky light of evening. He was nowhere to be found. "Heero? Are you here?" Duo heard voices behind him. He turned and moved toward them. They grew louder as he neared the edge of the clearing. He leaned a shoulder against a tree and - Suddenly he was in the kitchen of the safehouse. Heero, Quatre, Wufei, and Trowa all sat at the table there, the remains of dinner before them. Their faces were creased with concern and worry. "They're talking about me," Duo murmured, his eyes going wide. Duo couldn't hear what they said, but he somehow knew their feelings. They were troubled, worried about what was happening to him. Duo watched the scene as though viewing a movie, a disembodied presence the actors around the table couldn't sense. "Are you ready?" Duo turned his head at the sound of the now-familiar baritone voice, smooth and mellow. He was in the forest clearing again. Was it Heero's voice? Duo couldn't be sure. "Ready for what?" Duo's hand was still resting on a tree; he looked over his shoulder at the boy. "Come." "No, not till you tell me who you are and what you want with me." Duo turned around and crossed his arms over his chest. The boy stood in shadows, waning sunlight dancing through leaves and branches across his face. Duo thought he saw Heero's blue eyes, his tight lips, but he couldn't be sure. "I want to make you happy." "But who are you? Why do you keep coming back to me in this dream, over and over?" "I want to make love to you, Duo." As the boy spoke his name for the first time, Duo felt a gentle tugging in his heart, a familiar longing for the intimacy he very much wanted with Heero Yuy. "Heero? Is it you, Heero?" The boy turned and walked to the middle of the forest clearing, stopping at the stone altar there. Without turning around, he put his hand on the smooth slab and spoke once more. "Come, Duo. Come with me." He walked to the other side of the clearing and melted into the trees. "Heero! Don't leave me, Heero!" Duo Maxwell ran across the clearing, stopping at the edge of the forest. He called after the boy. "Heero? Come back, Heero!" Hesitating, his heart hammering, Duo reached his hand into the forest. A cool wind met trembling fingers. Swallowing hard, Duo stepped into the thick grove of trees, and vanished.
"Listless, no appetite, morose?" Chang Wufei finished Heero's question. "He's been anything but that. He eats like a horse!" "What's new about that?" Quatre said, running his fingers through pale yellow hair. "That's my point," Wufei said. "If he were depressed, he wouldn't be hungry. He'd be quiet, sullen." "And he's more argumentative, crankier than usual, if anything." Trowa Barton idly tapped an index finger against the tip of an unused spoon, lifting the handle only to let it fall back softly against the Formica tabletop. He stared at the spoon without seeing it. "Well, if he was having a nightmare, why'd he want to go back to sleep?" Quatre asked. "That doesn't make any sense, either." "Unless ... " Heero's eyes narrowed. "Heero? Unless what?" Wufei voiced the question that he, Trowa, and Quatre were all thinking. Three pairs of eyes focused on Heero. "Nothing," Heero said, dismissing the thought with a wave of his hand. "I - I don't know. Maybe not even Duo knows." An uneasy silence settled on the room. As Gundam pilots, Heero, Wufei, Quatre and Trowa were trained to size up a situation quickly and then take decisive action. The behavior Duo was exhibiting defied their paradigms. There seemed to be no clear course to follow. "Heero -" Trowa broke the silence, reaching for his friend's hand. He gently squeezed it. A look of concern passed between Quatre and Wufei. "We wait; until we know more, we wait." Heero spoke quietly but firmly, standing as he did so, indicating that he was finished talking. "I'm going for a walk. Alone." He walked to the back door with a purposeful stride and left his friends sitting around the table. TBC
